Riichi Mahjong

Sanma (3 players) (interpretation by Qnnrad)

Setup
  • remove the Manzu (numbers) tiles from 2 to 8 (leave 1 Manzu and 9 Manzu in play)
  • each player makes a wall of 36 tiles
  • in the dead wall flip the top 5th tile from the left for Dora indicator
  • each player starts with 35,000 points
  • choose a scoring method (see Scoring:)
  • start with East round & East player, and go East > South > West > East > etc.
Gameplay

Game follows Riichi rules, except:

  • you're not allowed to call Chi
  • you can call Kita to get 1 han for each North tile you’ve called with Kita (if North is Dora, double han points for each Kita)
  • to call Kita: announce “Kita”, set North tile aside, draw a replacement tile from the end of the dead wall and move the last tile from the live wall to the dead wall (the dead wall always has 14 tiles)
  • calling Kita breaks ippatsu, double riichi, chiihou etc.
  • winning on the replacement tile drawn after calling Kita gives the Rinshan Kaihou
  • it is possible to Ron with the North tile just called Kita by another player
  • Dora indicator 1 Manzu indicates 9 Manzu as Dora
Scoring
  • add 1 han for each Kita called (2 han each if North is Dora)
  • use one scoring method:
    • either payments work the same as regular 4-player scoring tables (due to missing 4th player, Ron is worth more than Tsumo win)
    • or have losing players split missing player’s payment (from 4-player scoring tables)
  • each Honba adds 200 bonus points instead of 300 points

Note:

  • calling Kita doesn't reveal any new Dora
  • calling Kita doesn’t open your hand (it is still concealed if it was before Kita call)
  • you don't have to call Kita (you can keep North tiles to make triplets, pairs or Kokushi Musou)

Hayahaya scoring chart

The general way you use the chart is you pull unused tiles from the wall and cover each spot as you go through the three steps.

Step 1

On the chart (top most box) you determine how many han the hand is worth. If the total is seven or greater, you use the values listed in the box to pay out depending on whether you are a non-dealer (the top values) or a dealer (the bottom values). So you can see if the total hand value (including bazoro) is 7, on a non-dealer Ron it pays 8000 or 2000 / 4000 on a tsumo.

Step 2

If the Han value is between 3 and 6. Working left to right, it’s asking you about the base value of the hand, whether the win was a tsumo or Ron, whether the pair was yakuhai, and whether the wait was a penchan, kanchan, or tanki. The boxes to the right of that are asking about open triplets, closed triplets, open kans and closed kans. You use the red boxes for 2-8 and the orange boxes for terminals and honor tiles.

Step 3

Use the XY chart to determine the hand value and how it should pay out. Blue boxes are non-dealer values, red boxes are dealer values. The final segments in each box are describing the Ron and tsumo values and who pays what.

Other significant comments include notes on fu values for pinfu tsumo / ron (20/30) and chiitoitsu (25) which is not rounded up to 30.
